«Para mí, el teatro ha sido un imprevisto. Uno de los más bonitos de mi vida. Había estudiado Comunicación Audiovisual y trabajaba como guionista, hasta que un pequeño bar del Eixample lo cambiaría todo. Un amigo tuvo una idea: “Conozco un bar. Necesitan clientes. ¿Por qué no montamos obras de 15 minutos y les traemos público?”. Yo contesté: “nunca he escrito teatro”. “Pero sabes escribir, ¿no?”, me dijo. Lo hicimos. El bar se llenó de gente y fue entonces cuando comprendí lo que realmente siempre había querido hacer: contar historias. Fundamos nuestra propia compañía, Pentateatre, y después de varios textos breves actuando en espacios no convencionales, me lancé a escribir un largo. Llegaría “Tras la puerta”, con la que daría el salto a una sala de teatro. Luego vendrían “Xarnegos” y “El niño de la tele”. De modo que esta ha sido mi formación teatral: escribir, escribir y volver a escribir. Y así, sin darme cuenta, ya no puedo parar de imaginar historias. Aunque no sólo las imagino en los escenarios. También me divierte proyectarlas en una pantalla. He escrito programas, series o documentales para productoras como Mediapro o Atresmedia, entre otras. Incluso una vez recibí el Premio del Jurado al Mejor Piloto de Ficción en el Festival Zoom. Porque al final, sólo se trata de eso. Contar historias. Donde sea y como sea.» (Marc de la Varga).

«For me, theatre was unexpected—one of the most beautiful surprises of my life. I had studied Audiovisual Communication and was working as a screenwriter, until a small bar in the Eixample changed everything. A friend had an idea: “I know a bar. They need customers. Why don’t we stage 15-minute plays and bring in an audience?” I replied, “I’ve never written for theatre.” “But you know how to write, right?” he said. So we did it. The bar filled with people, and that’s when I understood what I had always truly wanted to do: tell stories. We founded our own company, Pentateatre, and after several short pieces performed in unconventional spaces, I decided to write a full-length play. That became Tras la puerta, which took me to a proper theatre venue. Then came Xarnegos and El niño de la tele. So this has been my theatre training: write, write, and write some more. And just like that, I can’t stop imagining stories. Though I don’t imagine them only for the stage—I also love projecting them onto a screen. I’ve written shows, series, and documentaries for production companies like Mediapro and Atresmedia, among others. I even received the Jury Prize for Best Fiction Pilot at the Zoom Festival once. Because in the end, that’s what it’s all about: telling stories. Wherever and however.» (Marc de la Varga).

Escritura. / Style.

«Mi estilo dramatúrgico es como el PP con la Extrema Derecha: no termina de definirse. Empecé con el formato de textos breves y me pasé a los largos, he escrito en función del espacio real donde se representaría el texto y también he seguido los cánones más convencionales. En general, me gusta jugar con los formatos y plantearme, casi siempre, nuevas estructuras. Pero si algo comparten todas mis obras es la comedia. Por muy dramática que sea la situación, no concibo explicar una historia sin que haya momentos cómicos, la cual cosa no quiere decir que siempre escriba comedias. Para mí, el drama y la comedia son dos polos que se atraen. Una no puede vivir sin la otra. Así es como yo lo vivo. Puede que esta sea otra de mis características: escribir desde mí. Aunque esté contando la historia de otra persona, la única manera que tengo de creérmela es compartiendo el viaje de mis personajes. Plasmar en ellos mis miedos, mis frustraciones, mis ilusiones… Intentar encontrarme a mí mismo en mis textos, que al final, es lo mismo que intentan hacer todos mis personajes: buscar su lugar en el mundo. Bueno, bien mirado, igual sí que tengo un estilo definido, aunque no sabía cómo explicarlo. Como el PP con la Extrema Derecha.» (Marc de la Varga).

«My playwriting style is a bit like a conservative party flirting with the far right: it still hasn’t quite defined itself. I started writing short plays and moved on to full-length ones; I’ve written with specific venues in mind and also followed more conventional formats. In general, I like to play with form and almost always challenge myself with new structures. But if there’s one thing all my plays share, it’s comedy. No matter how dramatic the situation, I can’t imagine telling a story without at least some comic moments—which doesn’t mean I always write comedies. For me, drama and comedy are two forces that attract each other. One can’t exist without the other. That’s how I experience it. Maybe that’s another feature of my writing: I write from myself. Even when I’m telling someone else’s story, the only way I can believe it is by going on the journey with my characters. I pour into them my fears, my frustrations, my hopes… I try to find myself in my writing, which in the end is exactly what my characters are trying to do: find their place in the world. So maybe I do have a defined style—I just didn’t know how to explain it. Like that conservative party, still figuring things out.» (Marc de la Varga).
