Biografía. / Biography.

Benjamín Jiménez de la Hoz nació en el otoño del 79. Nació en la capital porque antes no quedaba más remedio que ir a nacer allí, aunque sus primeros años los pasó en una ciudad de lo que antes se llamaba el cinturón rojo, cosas de la lucha de clases. En Madrid comenzó estudios de ingeniero agrónomo pero pronto se dio cuenta de que la vida del campo es dura. Por eso acaba en Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada, vaya usted a saber qué es eso, y realizando el Máster de Teatro y Artes Escénicas. Con compañeros de Literatura, fundó en 2008 Teatro Sumergido, con la que compartió una antigua imprenta. En el Máster coincide con los que serían los fundadores de Turlitava Teatro, con los que aparte de compartir alegrías y penas asciende de taquillero a dramaturgo hasta que se va. Se gana la vida con diversos trabajos, de bedel a jardinero, escribe en el blog de crítica cultural, perdón por el oxímoron, La Carcoma y, junto a Jana Pacheco, escribe una serie de textos teatrales breves a partir de encuentros fortuitos con objetos en la calle. Textos escritos a través del wasap. Una vez escribió un tweet que fue retuiteado más de 200 veces y un post de Facebook con más de doscientos likes.

«Benjamín Jiménez de la Hoz was born in the autumn of '79. He was born in the capital because back then there was no other option, although he spent his early years in a city that used to be called the red belt—class struggle and all that. In Madrid, he began studying Agricultural Engineering but soon realized that rural life is tough. So he ended up in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature—whatever that is—and pursued a Master's in Theater and Performing Arts. In 2008, along with Literature classmates, he founded Teatro Sumergido, sharing an old print shop with them. During his Master's, he crossed paths with the future founders of Turlitava Teatro, with whom he shared joys and sorrows, climbing the ranks from box office attendant to playwright—until he left. He makes a living through various jobs, from janitor to gardener, writes for the cultural critique blog (pardon the oxymoron) La Carcoma and, alongside Jana Pacheco, creates a series of short theatrical texts inspired by chance encounters with objects found on the street—texts written via WhatsApp. Once, he wrote a tweet that got retweeted over 200 times and a Facebook post with more than 200 likes.»

«Escuchar en la cola del supermercado, en el metro, en las comidas familiares. Tomar de diálogos de películas, volver a poner en boca de otros aquella vez que fuiste sincero. Lo personal es político, lo íntimo no está aislado de lo social, no hay social sin la individualidad. El diálogo es acción, es intención, es dialéctica. Textos abiertos, múltiples, pero intentar huir de la ambigüedad. Del personaje sólo conocemos lo que hace o lo que dice, no crearle una genealogía, a veces ni nombre. Escribir para la gente que te importa, intentar llegar a ellos.» (Benjamín Jiménez de la Hoz).

The personal is political, the intimate is not detached from the social, and there is no social without individuality. Dialogue is action. It’s intention. It’s dialectic. Open and multi-layered texts, but trying to steer clear from ambiguity. All we know about the character is what they do or what they say.
