Sinopsis. / Synopsis.

Isabel y Gerard viajan en coche hacia casa de su hija, Clara, que ha decidido trasladarse en un pueblo de la costa del País Valenciano. Es una mañana de septiembre y hace un calor insoportable. Además, el coche se ha quedado parado en medio de un camino de tierra. Alrededor, solo hay los campos de arroz, dorados, a punto para segar. "Una carretera sense arbres" es la historia de dos profesores de Arte Dramático de una de las escuelas de interpretación más prestigiosas del país. Los dos son figuras importantes de la escena contemporánea y, como referentes, han sido y son todavía muy admirados. Esta semana, pero, han sucedido unos hechos que cambiarán sus vidas para siempre. Todos sus problemas, inevitablemente, acabarán saliendo a la luz en esta carretera rodeada de arrozales, donde ahora se encuentran esperando... la grúa.

Isabel and Gerard are driving to visit their daughter, Clara, who has decided to move to a village on the coast of the Valencian Country. It's a September morning and the heat is unbearable. To make matters worse, the car has broken down on a dirt road. All around them, there’s nothing but golden rice fields, ready for harvest. "Una carretera sense arbres" (A Road Without Trees) tells the story of two acting teachers from one of the most prestigious drama schools in the country. Both are prominent figures in the contemporary theatre scene and, as such, have been—and still are—highly admired. But this week, events have occurred that will change their lives forever. All their unresolved issues will inevitably come to light on this road surrounded by rice paddies, where they now wait... for the tow truck.

Biografía. / Biography.

Clàudia Serra es escritora, directora y miembro del comité editorial de Afers Narrativa. Ha estudiado Filologia Catalana en la Universitat de València y ha realizado el Màster Universitari en Estudis Teatrals del Institut del Teatre de Barcelona. Como dramaturga, también se ha formado en el Obrador de la Sala Beckett, así como ha asistido a laboratorios y residencias de dramaturgia en París, Aviñón, Olot, Barcelona... Empezó gracias a los Premis de Creacció de la Universitat de València, que le permitieron estrenar sus dos primeras piezas en la Sala Matilde Salvador, cosa que la impulsó para seguir con otras creaciones más adelante. Actualmente, Serra ha publicado y estrenado varias obras, entre las que cabe destacar especialmente "Una carretera sense arbres" y "Un estiu", ambas publicadas el 2024 en la editorial Sembra Llibres y reconocidas en varios premios y nominaciones.

Clàudia Serra is a writer, director, and member of the editorial board of Afers Narrativa. She studied Catalan Philology at the University of Valencia and completed the Master’s Degree in Theatre Studies at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. As a playwright, she has also trained at the Sala Beckett’s Obrador and has participated in playwriting labs and residencies in Paris, Avignon, Olot, Barcelona... Her journey began thanks to the Premis de Creació from the University of Valencia, which allowed her to premiere her first two plays at Sala Matilde Salvador—an experience that encouraged her to continue creating. Currently, Serra has published and premiered several plays, notably Una carretera sense arbres and Un estiu, both published in 2024 by Sembra Llibres and recognised with various awards and nominations.

Escritura. / Style.

«Escribo teatro desde que era muy pequeña. Empezó todo como un juego. Después, cuando descubrí autores como Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams o Sam Shepard (entre muchos otros) supe que me quería dedicar a escribir. Poco a poco he ido incorporando nuevos referentes, una larga lista de autoras y autores que quizás ahora no es necesario mencionar y que envidio y a la vez admiro por cómo escriben y por el mundo que proyectan en el escenario: un mundo ficcional que nos hace entender mejor el nuestro. Es así como querría escribir yo también.
Escribo obras de teatro porque es en este espacio donde me encuentro directamente manipulando la palabra, a través de la voz de los personajes. La palabra, el lenguaje, son engañosos, están llenos de falsedades y de visiones del mundo muy concretas y distorsionadas, que muestran que no hay una única verdad ni un único pensamiento. Es en estas contradicciones del lenguaje donde yo encuentro la literatura.
Escribo en catalán porque es mi lengua. Inevitablemente, acostumbro a centrarme en temas que podríamos llamar “polémicos”. Porque son los que emocionalmente más me afectan. No sé si se podría decir que hago teatro “político”, pero, en todo caso, sí que acostumbro a hacer obras de teatro comprometido. Creo que un autor, al fin y al cabo, siempre se tiene que comprometer en su obra, en sus personajes y, sobre todo, en su realidad.» (Clàudia Serra).

«I’ve been writing plays since I was very young. It all started as a game. Later, when I discovered authors like Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, or Sam Shepard (among many others), I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to writing. Little by little, I’ve incorporated new references—a long list of writers I may not need to name now—whom I admire and envy for how they write and for the worlds they project on stage: fictional worlds that help us better understand our own. That’s how I would like to write too.
I write plays because it’s in this space that I find myself directly shaping language through the voices of characters. Words, language—they’re deceptive, full of falsehoods and very specific, distorted views of the world, revealing that there is no single truth or way of thinking. It’s in these contradictions of language that I find literature.
I write in Catalan because it’s my language. Inevitably, I tend to focus on topics we might call “controversial,” because they affect me most deeply. I don’t know if what I do could be called “political” theatre, but in any case, I do tend to create engaged theatre. I believe that an author, ultimately, must always be committed to their work, to their characters, and above all, to their reality.» (Clàudia Serra).
