Sinopsis.

No volveré a pasar hambre, texto galardonado en 2017 con el XXVI Premio de Guion Radiofónico Margarita Xirgu que conceden RNE y Radio Exterior de España en colaboración con la Fundación SGAE, es una ficción distópica con tintes del teatro del absurdo y un marcado tono de humor negro. En él, un matrimonio veterano se pregunta qué habrá podido pasar ahí afuera para que ellos no tengan luz, ni agua, ni nada qué comer. Pero su cuestionamiento no llega demasiado lejos, y su iniciativa se queda en una intención vaga, casi catatónica ante un posible cataclismo del que no conocemos nada. Excepto que una hierba impetuosa no deja de crecer. Ambos, siempre a punto de hacer algo, pero sin llevar sus propósitos a la práctica, se relacionan como un viejo matrimonio gastado y al mismo tiempo cómplice. La llegada del jardinero-pastor, Gallo Williams, provocará en ellos una bifurcación en sus deseos: uno quiere comer; la otra, procrear.

No volveré a pasar hambre, awarded in 2017 with the XXVI Margarita Xirgu Radio Script Prize granted by RNE and Radio Exterior de España in collaboration with the Fundación SGAE, is a dystopian fiction piece tinged with elements of theatre of the absurd and a distinct black humour. In it, an ageing couple wonders what might have happened out there for them to be left without electricity, without water, and with nothing to eat. Yet their questioning never gets very far, and their initiative remains a vague intention, almost catatonic in the face of a possible cataclysm about which we know nothing—except that a wild, unstoppable weed keeps growing. Both are always on the verge of doing something, but never quite act, relating to each other like a worn-out old couple and, at the same time, as accomplices. The arrival of the gardener-shepherd, Gallo Williams, will trigger a split in their desires: one wants to eat; the other, to procreate.

«No se puede negar que flota en “No volveré a pasar hambre” un vago aroma beckettiano y, más concretamente, una circunstancia dramática que no puede dejar de evocar “Final de partida” (1956). La obra de Paz Palau nos sitúa, en efecto, en un mundo crepuscular, ante unos personajes que se saben al borde de la extinción, tras una catástrofe tal vez apocalíptica que parece haber “apagado” los restos de la civilización y dejado que la naturaleza vuelva a tomar las riendas. Y el implacable crecimiento de la hierba parece ser el paradigma de esta humanidad inerte, derrotada, extinguiéndose día a día al ritmo de su propia impotencia.» (José Sanchis Sinisterra)

«It is undeniable that No volveré a pasar hambre carries a faint Beckettian aroma, and more specifically, a dramatic situation that inevitably recalls Endgame (1956). Paz Palau’s play places us, indeed, in a twilight world, before characters who know themselves to be on the verge of extinction, after a perhaps apocalyptic catastrophe that seems to have “switched off” what remains of civilisation and allowed nature to take back control. The relentless growth of the grass appears to stand as a paradigm of this inert humanity, defeated and slowly fading away, day by day, to the rhythm of its own impotence.» (José Sanchis Sinisterra)

Biografía. / Biography.

Paz Palau (Castellón, España, 1980) es licenciada en Dramaturgia por la RESAD, en Psicología por la Universidad Jaume I de Castellón y en Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada por la Universidad de Granada. Ha recibido formación específica de escritura, guion y dramaturgia con autores como José Saramago, Adolfo Simón, José Manuel Mora, Guillermo Heras, Enzo Cormann, Lukas Bärfuss, José Sanchis Sinisterra, Paco Zarzoso y Roland Schimmelpfennig. Ha recibido diferentes ayudas y reconocimientos como el XXVI Premio de Teatro Radiofónico Margarita Xirgu de RNE, Ayuda de la Comunidad de la Madrid para la creación, Residencia Artística El Pavón Teatro Kamikaze, IX Laboratorio de escritura teatral de la Fundación SGAE, Eurodram (European Network for drama in translation), V Laboratorio de Dramaturgia Insula Dramataria del Institut Valencià de Cultura, Factoría Echegaray de Málaga o la Ayuda de viaje para la promoción internacional de las artes escénicas de la Fundación SGAE.

Paz Palau (Castellón, Spain, 1980) holds degrees in Playwriting from RESAD, in Psychology from the Jaume I University of Castellón, and in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature from the University of Granada. She has received specialized training in writing, screenwriting, and playwriting with authors such as José Saramago, Adolfo Simón, José Manuel Mora, Guillermo Heras, Enzo Cormann, Lukas Bärfuss, José Sanchis Sinisterra, Paco Zarzoso, and Roland Schimmelpfennig. Her work has been supported and recognized through awards and grants including the XXVI Margarita Xirgu Radio Drama Award from RNE, the Creation Grant from the Community of Madrid, the Artistic Residency at El Pavón Teatro Kamikaze, the 9th Playwriting Lab of the SGAE Foundation, Eurodram (European Network for Drama in Translation), the 5th Ínsula Dramataria Playwriting Lab of the Institut Valencià de Cultura, Málaga’s Factoría Echegaray, and the International Promotion Travel Grant for the Performing Arts from the SGAE Foundation.

«Escribir es un intento, siempre, de descifrar el mundo. Y en esa tentativa nace, cada vez, un interés distinto, una nueva forma de contarse. Las formas cambian. Cambian los anhelos. Mi escritura busca la experimentación en la estructura y el lenguaje, en la disolución de los géneros, en hacer lo que todavía no sé hacer. El modo en que me enfrento a cada texto está supeditado al paisaje. Cada momento vital condiciona la obra. Imposible separar vida y palabra.» (Paz Palau).

«The first time I read Beckett I thought: Is this possible? The same thing happened to me when I read Koltès, Rodrigo García, Boris Vian and Georges Perec, etc., for the first time. I’m attracted by form. Hugely. Experimenting with the possibilities offered by language and dramatic structure. I adore the absurd; it’s as if it were my natural habitat. I’m attracted by a certain amoral and disturbing vision of the everyday. Dark humour is the only thing that makes me laugh out loud. I’m interested in the poetic, but its more coarse underbelly. My playwriting style is constantly developing, much like myself, but recently I have been focusing on dystopian worlds. I write theatre because it is the land of freedom.» (Paz Palau).
