Sinopsis. / Synopsis.
En diciembre de 1999, tres adolescentes van de excursión a las cuevas de Mentxaka, en la costa vizcaína. Allí, a las puertas del siglo XXI y con la Prehistoria bajo sus pies, un suceso determinará en quiénes van a convertirse. Veinticinco años después, se reúnen en Mentxaka en el día más importante de sus vidas. ¿Qué ocurre cuando un relato te devora? ‘Esta tarde en Mentxaka‘ es una historia sobre las historias: las que contamos, las que se crean los demás sobre nosotros y, sobre todo, las que nos contamos a nosotros mismos. Pero es, sobre todo, la historia de un viaje hacia el reencuentro: con los otros y con uno mismo, en el eterno regreso a casa. El texto toma como referencia las apariciones marianas del siglo XX en enclaves como Garabandal o Međugorje y se hace una pregunta: ¿qué pasó cuando estos niños se convirtieron en adultos? Se convierte, así, en una obra sobre la memoria y el tiempo, y la fina línea entre la verdad y la mentira.
In December 1999, three teenagers take a trip to the Mentxaka caves on the Biscay coast. There, at the cusp of the 21st century and with prehistory beneath their feet, an event occurs that will define who they become. Twenty-five years later, they reunite in Mentxaka on the most important day of their lives. What happens when a story consumes you? This Afternoon in Mentxaka is a story about stories: the ones we tell, the ones others construct about us, and most importantly, the ones we tell ourselves. Above all, it’s the tale of a journey toward reunion—both with others and with oneself—in the eternal return home. The text draws inspiration from 20th-century Marian apparitions in places like Garabandal or Međugorje and poses a question: what happened when these children grew up? It evolves into a play about memory, time, and the delicate line between truth and lies.

"Esta tarde en Mentxaka" nace como una investigación dramatúrgica en torno a la mentira, que luego evoluciona para ser una profundización sobre la relación que tiene ésta con el tiempo. Es una historia sobre las historias. La mentira y su evolución. La mentira en la memoria. La relación de la memoria personal con la memoria colectiva. Un relato sobre el Relato: el que creamos sobre nosotros mismos a lo largo del tiempo, el que la sociedad adquiere de nosotros y, sobre todo, el relato que nos contamos a nosotros mismos. El relato de nosotros. El proyecto nace también como un juego actoral y temporal: seis personajes para tres intérpretes. Tres adolescentes y tres adultos, separados por 25 años: 1999 y 2024. Quiénes fueron y quiénes son. ¿Y si pudieses interactuar con tu yo pasado/futuro? Así, nace otra vía: quiénes serán. Qué porvenir nos espera, qué mundo dejamos a los jóvenes-adultos del futuro.
This Afternoon in Mentxaka began as a dramaturgical investigation into the nature of lies, which then evolved into an exploration of their relationship with time. It is a story about stories—the lie and its transformation, the lie within memory, and the interplay between personal and collective memory. It’s a narrative about the Narrative: the one we craft about ourselves over time, the one society adopts about us, and, most significantly, the one we tell ourselves. The narrative of us. The project also emerges as an acting and temporal experiment: six characters portrayed by three performers. Three teenagers and three adults, separated by 25 years—1999 and 2024. Who they were and who they are now. And what if you could interact with your past or future self? This opens another avenue: who will they become? What future awaits us, and what world are we leaving for the young adults of tomorrow?

Biografía. / Biography.
Iñigo Cobo es director de cine y teatro, y gestor cultural, así como co-fundador y actual director del Festival de Santurtzi, desde 2013. Ha recibido la Sardina de Plata (2016) en Santurtzi y el Premio Bizkaia (2017) del DEIA. A través de este festival y su proyecto Saregabe, ha puesto en marcha diversos proyectos de dinamización cultural y social en el municipio. Formado en Comunicación Audiovisual y Educación Especial, ha hecho cooperación internacional en países como Sudáfrica y Marruecos y trabajado en varias asociaciones en ámbitos educativos. Tras formarse en espacios como LaJoven de Madrid, desde 2020 está vinculado a la sala de teatro Pabellón 6, en Bilbao, donde es parte integrante de su equipo y de la dirección artística, y en la cual ha dirigido o participado en algunas de sus producciones. Para cine, además de un amplio recorrido como cortometrajista, ha dirigido la película documental Generación Anti Todo (2018), sobre el grupo Eskorbuto, estrenada en salas comerciales y presentada en ZINEBI. Su segundo largometraje documental, La vida en el centro (2020), se estrenó en el Homeless Film Festival.
Iñigo Cobo is a film and theater director, cultural manager, and co-founder and current director of the Santurtzi Festival since 2013. He has been awarded the Sardina de Plata (2016) in Santurtzi and the Bizkaia Award (2017) by DEIA. Through this festival and his project Saregabe, he has launched various cultural and social revitalization initiatives in the municipality. Trained in Audiovisual Communication and Special Education, he has engaged in international cooperation in countries like South Africa and Morocco and worked with several associations in educational settings. After training in spaces such as LaJoven in Madrid, he has been affiliated with the Pabellón 6 theater in Bilbao since 2020, where he is a core member of the team and the artistic direction, having directed or participated in some of its productions. In film, alongside an extensive career as a short filmmaker, he directed the documentary *Generación Anti Todo* (2018), about the band Eskorbuto, which premiered in commercial theaters and was presented at ZINEBI. His second documentary feature, *La vida en el centro* (2020), premiered at the Homeless Film Festival.
Escritura. / Style.
«Mi dramaturgia es una evolución de todo lo que vino antes. Creo. O eso me parece. Sonará tonto, seguro: mi última obra existe porque existió la anterior, y de alguna manera están todos unidas por un hilo que, estoy seguro (de esto sí, ahora), alcanza el primer folio que escribí de niño, o el primer cómic que garabateé de adolescente: por tanto, mi dramaturgia es una construcción constante, que se va definiendo con cada proyecto que realizo, tan indefinible como el presente, y lo anterior ayuda a formar lo siguiente. Mi dramaturgia busca tensar los límites y jugar, experimentar y retorcer el lenguaje y los personajes que lo hablan. Y si tuviera que establecer un patrón en todas mis obras, es de las personas anónimas, el día a día, lo cotidiano y la cotidianidad, y precisamente la influencia del pasado en el presente: yo soy lo que fueron; y no desde la grandilocuencia, sino desde las cosas pequeñitas, que son precisamente las que nos conforman y las que nos reforman. Es decir: la fuerza de las generaciones y cómo se relacionan, y la juventud como motor absoluto y etapa fundamental y vital.» (Iñigo Cobo).
«My dramaturgy is an evolution of everything that came before. I think. Or at least it seems that way. It will sound silly, I’m sure: my latest play exists because the previous one did, and somehow they’re all connected by a thread that, I’m certain (this I am sure of now), reaches back to the first page I wrote as a child or the first comic I sketched as a teenager. Therefore, my dramaturgy is a constant construction, one that takes shape with every project I undertake, as undefinable as the present, where the past helps shape what comes next. My dramaturgy seeks to push boundaries and play, to experiment and twist the language and the characters who speak it. If I had to identify a pattern across all my works, it would be that of anonymous people, everyday life, the ordinary and its ordinariness, and precisely the influence of the past on the present: I am what they were. And not from grandiosity, but from the small things, which are precisely what shape and reshape us. In other words: the power of generations and how they relate, and youth as an absolute driving force and a fundamental, vital stage of life.» (Iñigo Cobo).
