Biografía. / Biography.

«Vengo de otra disciplina artística que tiene que ver más con el lenguaje de los sonidos que con el texto teatral. La música, que como dice la filósofa Susanne Langer no está erigida como un lenguaje, ha sido el eje que orbita en el inicio de mi espacio creativo. Aunque la música es un arte asemántico eso no quiere decir que esté despojada de una carga que expresa emociones y sentimientos. Al mismo tiempo, la música es capaz de comunicar y articular un discurso que nos invita a la reflexión al igual que ocurre con el texto escrito. Mi primer contacto en el mundo de la dramaturgia fue como lector de textos teatrales. Mis inicios en la escritura fueron los relatos breves. Mi primer texto dramático vio la luz a raíz de un curso que realice con el dramaturgo cubano Freddy Artiles Machado. De ese curso nació un teatro corto titulado “El arte de la paz-y-ciencia” que está incluido en la serie de relatos breves “Los fantasmas del señor perfecto”. Posteriormente a este curso comencé a escribir mi primera obra de teatro “D.E.P. que todo es mentira”. El resto de mi formación en el área de la dramaturgia ha sido de forma autodidáctica.» (Pedro Santana Torres).

«I come from another artistic discipline, one more closely tied to the language of sound than to that of theatre. Music, which—as philosopher Susanne Langer says—is not established as a language, has been the central axis around which my creative space began to orbit. Although music is an asemantic art, that does not mean it is devoid of the ability to convey emotions and feelings. At the same time, music can communicate and articulate a discourse that invites reflection, much like written text does. My first encounter with the world of playwriting was as a reader of theatrical texts. I began writing through short stories, and my first dramatic text came to life after taking a course with Cuban playwright Freddy Artiles Machado. From that course emerged a short play titled El arte de la paz-y-ciencia, included in the series of short stories Los fantasmas del señor perfecto. After that experience, I began to write my first full-length play, D.E.P. que todo es mentira. The rest of my training in dramaturgy has been entirely self-taught.» (Pedro Santana Torres).

«No tengo una escritura que la pueda catalogar en un estilo concreto. Mis obras van naciendo al mismo compás que mis inquietudes sobre temas concretos. Los temas sobre los que he escrito son en relación a los abusos de los poderes, en sus diferentes vertientes, la mentira y el tema de la muerte.» (Pedro Santana Torres).

«I don’t have a writing style that can be classified within a specific category. My plays are born in step with my concerns about certain themes. The subjects I have written about deal with the abuse of power in its various forms, deceit, and death.» (Pedro Santana Torres).
