Biografía. / Biography.

«No puedo parar de aprender. Este puede ser el mantra que me he ido repitiendo a lo largo de mi vida. Me recuerdo leyendo y escribiendo desde muy pequeña y, sobre todo, mirando. La curiosidad no ha hecho más que devorarme con el transcurrir del tiempo y me ha llevado de un lugar a otro. Estudié magisterio en la Universidad pública de Navarra, de ahí guié mis pasos a los estudios de Interpretación en la Escuela Navarra de Teatro donde me di cuenta que, tal vez, actuar no era lo mío. Con el cambio de siglo me marché al Institut del Teatre de Barcelona en donde me licencié en dramaturgia y dirección. Y de allí, vuelta a mi Pamplona, en donde no paré de escribir y dirigir. He podido disfrutar de mis textos, de otras dramaturgias y de no pocas adaptaciones de grandes autores. En estos años me ha dado tiempo a crear mi propia compañía, Producciones Maestras, sacarme un Máster en estudios avanzados de teatro por la Universidad Internacional de la Rioja y poder investigar sobre lo que escribo, cómo lo escribo y cómo lo llevo a escena. Resulta un trabajo apasionante y agotador, como todos aquellos trabajos que implican dejar parte de ti en el proceso. Lo que queda de mí, la mujer y la artista en la que me he convertido, sigue mirando con los mismos ojos llenos de curiosidad el recorrido de una vida que, a veces, me resulta ajena.» (Ana Maestrojuán).

«I can’t stop learning. This may well be the mantra I have repeated to myself throughout my life. I remember reading and writing from a very young age and, above all, observing. Curiosity has only continued to consume me as time has passed, carrying me from one place to another. I studied Education at the Public University of Navarra, and from there I moved on to Acting studies at the Navarra School of Theatre, where I realized that perhaps acting wasn’t truly for me. With the turn of the century, I went to the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, where I graduated in Playwriting and Directing. And from there, back to my hometown, Pamplona, where I never stopped writing and directing. I have had the chance to enjoy my own texts, other playwrights’ works, and not a few adaptations of great authors. Over these years, I’ve also had the time to create my own company, Producciones Maestras, earn a Master’s Degree in Advanced Theatre Studies from the International University of La Rioja, and explore what I write, how I write it, and how I bring it to the stage. It is a passionate and exhausting job—like all those that demand leaving a part of yourself in the process. What remains of me—the woman and the artist I have become—still looks upon the journey of a life, which at times feels almost foreign to me, with the same eyes full of curiosity.» (Ana Maestrojuán).

Escritura. / Style.

«Escribo desde mí para los demás, ya que considero que lo que me ocurre es algo universal. Me gusta fijarme en lo que sucede a mi alrededor y transformarlo en material dramático. Parto de situaciones realistas para trasportarlas a universos que desafíen las convenciones del espacio y del tiempo. Me gusta, mejor dicho, me obsesiona la visión del mundo que pueden tener mis personajes, los cuales van cobrando autonomía a lo largo de la obra. Disfruto con la palabra, lo qué significa y cómo suena. Me fascina lo que, a través de ella, se puede generar. Es el motor de mi escritura y gracias a ella, puedo dar voz a quien por un motivo u otro se la han quitado. En varias ocasiones he partido de personajes reales, mejor dicho, de mujeres reales para acercarlas a nuestra realidad en espacios imposibles. Desde Eva Perón a Ana Caro Mallen, de Artemisia Gentileschi a la Papisa Juana. Otro lugar en el que me gusta investigar es en los textos teatrales para la infancia. En ellos reduzco mi estatura y abro de forma infinita mi imaginación. Vuelvo a mirar sin parpadear, sin poner barreras. Vuelvo a mirar de forma cristalina.» (Ana Maestrojuán).

«I write from myself for others, because I believe that what happens to me is something universal. I like to observe what is happening around me and transform it into dramatic material. I start from realistic situations and transport them into universes that challenge the conventions of space and time. I like—better said, I am obsessed with—the vision of the world that my characters might have, characters who gradually gain autonomy throughout the play. I delight in words—in what they mean and how they sound. I am fascinated by what can be created through them. They are the driving force of my writing, and thanks to them I can give voice to those who, for one reason or another, have been silenced. On several occasions I have started from real figures—or rather, real women—in order to bring them closer to our present reality within impossible spaces: from Eva Perón to Ana Caro Mallén, from Artemisia Gentileschi to Pope Joan. Another field I love to explore is theatre for children. In those works, I shrink myself down and open my imagination endlessly. I look again without blinking, without setting boundaries. I look again with crystalline clarity.» (Ana Maestrojuán).
