Biografía. / Biography.

«Me licencié en Filología Hispánica, hice un postgrado en Enseignement et Recherche en la Université Lumière de Lyon y estudié Dirección Escénica y Dramaturgia en la RESAD. Sin embargo, mucho de lo que aprendí sobre el teatro fue con una compañía que actuaba en la calle por los pueblos de Almería. En la más absoluta precariedad. Luego me fui a vivir a Francia y en 5 años me mudé 8 veces de casa. Fruto de esa experiencia escribí mi primera obra: ‘Mudanzas’. Después de los atentados del Charlie Hebdo y del Bataclan, me instalé en Madrid en una casa que tiene un teatro dentro. Publiqué el poemario ‘Conocimiento del medio’ y empecé a trabajar como actor en La Cubana. Ahora sigo actuando y escribiendo. Parte de mi trabajo puede verse en www.juliobejar.es.» (Julio Béjar).

«I graduated in Hispanic Philology, completed a postgraduate degree in Teaching and Research at the Université Lumière de Lyon, and studied Stage Direction and Playwriting at RESAD. However, much of what I learned about theatre came from working with a company that performed in the streets and villages of Almería, in the most absolute precariousness. Later, I moved to France and, over the course of five years, changed homes eight times. Out of that experience I wrote my first play, Mudanzas. After the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan attacks, I settled in Madrid in a house with a theatre inside it. I published the poetry collection Conocimiento del medio and began working as an actor with La Cubana. I continue acting and writing today. «¿Cómo hablar de mi dramaturgia sin ponerme estupendo? Creo que escribir es algo muy pequeño que ocurre «en silencio, como todo lo grande», como dijo Stefan Zweig. Cuando escribo, me siento a la mesa a hablar con mis muertos. Escribo contra mis propios prejuicios. Escribo para encontrar enmiendas a la totalidad. Escribo para que «nada de lo humano me sea ajeno». Escribo porque sí. Creo que contar una historia de tú a tú, entre actor y espectador, conlleva una gran verdad. Escribir teatro es escribir en el tiempo.» (Julio Béjar).

«How can I speak about my dramaturgy without sounding pretentious? I believe writing is something very small that happens ‘in silence, like everything truly great’, as Stefan Zweig once said. When I write, I sit down at the table to speak with my dead. I write against my own prejudices. I write in search of radical revisions. I write so that ‘nothing human is alien to me’. I write simply because I do. I believe that telling a story face to face, between actor and spectator, carries a profound truth. Writing theatre is writing in time.» (Julio Béjar).
