Sinopsis. / Synopsis.

«You promised me a love story» is the story of a girl who meets a boy. Or the story of a boy who meets another boy. Or the story of a girl who meets another girl. Or the story of two people who do not know each other. It is a story that begins in Rome. And a story that begins in Paris. And a story that begins in Poland, in a train carriage. Well, actually it is the story of a writer trying to write a love story. What happens to us with love stories? Why do they generate attraction, even addiction, in some people and repulsion in others? What have we been taught about love? Why do those stories that once seemed romantic now seem like horror stories? Can you write a love story, a contemporary love story, and survive the attempt?

Notas. / Notes on the piece.

No llegué a tiempo.

My mother liked romantic stories. At some point she asked me to write a love story, but for it to be a comedy. The kind I like, you know. I didn't make it in time. It has been four years since she was no longer here (sometimes life is not a comedy). But precisely because it isn't always one, we need comedies and love stories, which tend to have a curious and strange relationship with means of transport. «You promised me a love story» is the story I would have liked to write for my mother. I think she would have liked to come to the premiere. I will never know what she would have said after seeing it. But this much is true: she got her love story.

Biografía. / Biography.

(Helena Tornero).

«I was born in the Figueres hospital, although at that time we lived in Port-Bou, specifically at the train station. I suppose it's not the same to open your front door and step onto the street as it is to step onto the platform of a border station. Nor is it the same when the door next door leads to the police station, with the holding cell right next to the stairs of your home. But at that time, I didn’t notice those details. Today I believe my first dramaturgy teacher was the Port-Bou station. At seven, I was given a diary and I started writing. I wrote with a pencil because I wasn’t very good with a pen. I did it because I enjoyed it, just like I enjoyed reading non-stop, dressing up with my sisters, and acting out invented stories. At thirteen, I worked with my sister on a radio show. We wrote the scripts by hand. I wanted to be an actress. And a singer. And an explorer. Then I studied tourism, learned languages, worked in foreign countries, worked for a year on a ship, and then ended up living in Barcelona, because after working at sea, one can never lose sight of it. And one day I realized that writing had always been there. And I decided to leave a secure and stable job to try theater, that intangible something. I entered the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona to study Dramaturgy and Stage Direction, to my own joy and my parents' concern. I wanted to try, observe, see, because with vocations, it's a bit like with relationships, you have to take time to get to know each other, because, as my aunt from Madrid says, everyone is good for a few drinks, but long-term relationships are another thing. And yes. In writing and theater, I have found my place, my vocation, my long-term relationship. A relationship perhaps not ideal (is any?), but the closest thing to what one expects from love: it requires effort, but it gives many good things. It teaches you to know yourself and grow, it demands responsibility, but it gives you space and allows you to be free.» (Helena Tornero).

Escritura. / Style.

No sé qué pensaré mañana. (Helena Tornero).

«I’m not sure if I have a style. I think it’s easier to judge this sort of thing from afar. And it’s not that I’m a person of few words. Those who know me will testify to this. I think I struggle to talk about myself in too much detail. When I do it, I guess all I do is scratch the surface. Perhaps that’s why I write plays. I find it much easier to talk through the mouth of others, through the words, gestures and stories of others. Although I’m aware that a bit of me filters through, of course. Perhaps it’s a way of hiding, I understand that. Showing myself and hiding at the same time. The task of a writer is shameless and modest, cowardly and hazardous, humble and smug. Pieces are written in solitude, for the words to live on in the emotions of someone unbeknown to the writer. I don’t know what I’ll think tomorrow. Today, I believe I’m writing to leave a trace. To leave some tracks in the snow, some footprints in the sand, some breadcrumbs that lead the way back home, because perhaps a house did once exist, but right now we’re not sure how to find it. Or maybe not. Perhaps the only true home is found in the writing itself. After all, it doesn’t come from within for no reason at all. Once I heard someone say that we should all construct the concept of a home inside ourselves. Perhaps this is what I do with my stories and characters. Word-by-word, I try to draw them a trail, give them a clue or mark out a road. Then I close my eyes and wish with all my might that they also manage to find their home. Whether outside or within themselves. Underneath the surface of the words.» (Helena Tornero).
